Hardware Warranty

The seller or manufacturer commitment that defines which hardware defects, repairs, parts, and time periods are covered after delivery.

Definition

A hardware warranty explains what happens when covered equipment fails during the warranty period. It should identify the covered machine or part, coverage dates, repair or replacement terms, labor responsibility, shipping rules, exclusions, and the process for making a claim.

A warranty is not the same as a maintenance service-level agreement. A warranty addresses covered defects after delivery. A maintenance SLA defines continuing response, escalation, parts, and service commitments for an operating environment. New, refurbished, and used IBM Power hardware can carry very different warranty terms, so the promise should be written against the exact serial number or item being purchased.

Example

A refurbished Power server described as tested is not fully protected unless the quote also states the warranty period, who supplies replacement parts, who pays shipping, and how quickly a failed unit will be handled.
