What people mean by an AS400 server

There has not been a server called an AS/400 since 2000. The name stuck to the platform anyway, and it now covers everything that runs IBM i: the original AS/400, the iSeries, the System i, and every IBM Power server since. When someone says AS400 server today they usually mean one specific machine, somewhere in that lineage, and they need to know what it is, what it needs, and what replaces it.

This page is the index. Each generation lists its machine types with the class and the rated maximum power draw, so you can find the machine you actually have. Every generation also has its own reference site with the full specification, processor options, and facilities data.

The machine type is the number that matters. A model name like S924 covers several machine types, and IBM publishes specifications, lifecycle dates and part compatibility against the machine type, not the model name. If you only know the model name, start from the generation and work down.

2004 to 2008

Power 5 servers, the eServer i5 line

The generation where the iSeries became the eServer i5 and then the System i. These are the oldest machines still occasionally found in production, and the electrical spread across the family is enormous: a 9406-520 is a 750 W machine on a standard circuit, and a 9406-595 is a three-phase 19.4 kW frame weighing more than 1,350 kilograms.

The 9406-570 publishes its figures per processor enclosure and scales to four of them, so a fully populated system is 5,200 W across 16 rack units rather than the 1,300 W the specification sheet appears to describe.

2007 to 2010

Power 6 servers, the System i era

POWER6 pushed clock speed harder than any Power generation before or since, reaching 5.0 GHz on POWER6+. This is also the generation where IBM's published electrical figures stop describing a whole machine: the Power 570 rates per drawer, and the larger configurations stack up to four of them.

A 32-core Power 570 is four stacked 8-core drawers: 5,600 W, 16 rack units and roughly 254 kg. Quotes written against the single-drawer figure are wrong by a factor of four.

2010 to 2014

Power 7 and Power 7+ servers

The Power 720 and Power 740 are the machines most often still running from this era. Each went through B, C and D refreshes of the same chassis, and the electrical rating moved with every one of them: a Power 720 went from 750 W to 995 W without changing its model name.

The Power 720 is the only model in this group that accepts a 120 V circuit. Every Power 740 requires 200 V or better, which is the most common surprise when a 720 is replaced by a 740 in a room wired for the older machine.

2014 to 2018

Power 8 servers

POWER8 is where the S-series naming arrived and where the scale-out line settled into the 2U and 4U shapes it still uses. On this generation the power supply feature, not the model name, decides what voltage a machine will accept, so two identical-looking S824 systems can have different electrical requirements.

The 8247-22L in its DC-powered form is rated at 948 W rather than the 1,810 W ac figure. Get the power supply feature code in writing before booking a relocation on this generation.

2018 to 2021

Power 9 servers

The largest installed base still in active service. POWER9 brought PCIe Gen4 to the platform, which is why so many of these machines are still doing real work. The A-generation and G-generation machine types matter here: a 9009-41A and a 9009-41G are both an S914 but carry different service positions and different lifecycle dates.

IBM lists 31 January 2026 as the transition to end of support services for the A-generation 9009-41A, 9009-22A and 9009-42A. Confirm the exact machine type before planning around a support date.

2021 to 2026

Power 10 servers

Power 10 introduced the Matrix Math Accelerator, Open Memory Interface and PCIe Gen5, and widened the family at both ends: the S1012 is the smallest IBM i server IBM had shipped in years, and the E1050 is the heaviest single drawer in the line. IBM withdrew Power 10 processor sales from marketing on 31 July 2026.

The S1024 carries exactly the same 2,750 W rating and 4U footprint as the Power 9 S924 while doing substantially more work, which is the clearest facilities case for a generation move: the room does not change, the capacity does.

2025 onward

Power 11 servers

The current generation, with DDR5 memory and on-chip AI acceleration. The entry model changes the facilities conversation rather than continuing it: the S1112 is rated at 550 W, runs on a standard 120 V circuit, and comes in a tower form for a site with no rack at all.

The S1112 is rated at roughly a third of the Power 9 S914 it typically replaces. For a single-partition IBM i shop, moving to Power 11 usually removes the electrical work from the project rather than adding to it.

Unannounced

Power 12

IBM has not announced a Power 12 name, date, machine type or specification. Any core count, clock speed, benchmark figure or electrical rating quoted for Power 12 today is describing something that does not exist yet.

What can be tracked honestly is the direction of travel across the shipping generations, and the confirmed IBM silicon work that a next generation would build on. That is what the Power 12 site does, with every claim carrying an explicit confidence label rather than a specification.
