Refurbished vs. New IBM i Hardware Buyer's Guide

A buyer's comparison of new and refurbished IBM Power and AS/400 hardware, covering testing standards, warranty terms, and total cost of ownership.

What buyers actually get with each option

New hardware ships with full IBM warranty coverage, the longest available support window, and current firmware out of the box. Refurbished hardware trades some of that runway and manufacturer backing for a lower price, with the seller's own testing and warranty standing in for factory-new assurance.

Neither option is automatically the right answer. The comparison should be made against the specific workload's tolerance for risk and the budget available for the purchase.

  • New hardware: full IBM warranty, longest support window, current firmware
  • Refurbished hardware: lower price, seller-dependent testing and warranty
  • Both: same underlying Power Systems architecture and capability

Judge refurbished sellers on testing, not marketing language

The term certified refurbished is not standardized across sellers, so the real evaluation should focus on what testing was actually performed. Buyers should ask for a written test report covering burn-in testing, diagnostic checks, and confirmation of remaining IBM support eligibility for the exact model and firmware level.

A seller who cannot describe their testing process in specific terms, or who only offers an as-is sale with no warranty, should be treated as higher risk regardless of price.

Run the total cost of ownership comparison honestly

Sticker price alone understates the real comparison. Buyers should factor in expected remaining service life, warranty coverage, and the likely cost of a follow-up hardware decision sooner than planned if a cheaper refurbished unit fails or runs out of support faster than expected.

In many cases, refurbished hardware with a strong warranty and documented testing delivers the better total cost of ownership. In others, particularly for the most business-critical workloads, the longer runway of new hardware justifies the premium.
