HMC (Hardware Management Console)

The physical or virtual appliance used to manage LPARs, apply firmware, and perform service functions on Power servers.

Definition

The HMC sits outside the IBM i partition itself and provides the management layer for LPAR configuration, firmware updates, and hardware service functions across one or more Power servers. It can run as dedicated physical appliance hardware or as a virtual instance depending on the environment's standards.

HMC firmware level must stay aligned with the Power server firmware it manages, which makes HMC compatibility part of any server upgrade planning.

Example

A shop managing three Power servers from a single HMC needs that HMC's firmware to support the firmware level running on all three.
