Firmware

The low-level software controlling a Power server's hardware behavior, independent of the IBM i operating system itself.

Definition

Firmware governs how the physical server hardware behaves at a level below the IBM i operating system, controlling things like processor management, hardware diagnostics, and HMC communication. Firmware level compatibility affects which feature codes, adapters, and HMC versions a server can support.

Hardware upgrade and console management decisions should always confirm the current firmware level, since compatibility between hardware components is frequently tied to specific firmware ranges.

Example

A memory upgrade feature code may require a minimum firmware level before it can be activated on an existing Power server.
