Program Overview
FlashCore Module Gen 5 (FCM5) is a physical break from the four generations before it. FCM1 through FCM4 all share the same U.2 NVMe drive form factor, which is why an older FlashSystem could sometimes be upgraded from one of those generations to the next. FCM5 moved to the EDSFF form factor introduced with the FlashSystem 5600, 7600, and 9600 refresh, so it is not a drop-in upgrade for any earlier FlashSystem model, including a fully current FCM4 array.
Buyers should treat an FCM5 order as tied to a specific current-generation platform purchase or expansion, not a media refresh on existing hardware. IBM pairs FCM5 with embedded ransomware-detection telemetry and quantum-safe encryption carried over from FCM4, plus the new 105.6 TB capacity point exclusive to the FlashSystem 9600.
