Glossary Term

watsonx

IBM's AI and data platform, made up of watsonx.ai, watsonx.data, and watsonx.governance, that connects to operational systems like PowerVS-hosted Power servers without requiring their data to move first.

Definition

watsonx is IBM's AI platform, split into three components. watsonx.ai handles foundation models and generative AI. watsonx.data is a hybrid data lakehouse that can sit alongside operational data without a full migration. watsonx.governance covers the compliance, risk, and monitoring layer regulated industries need before an AI project reaches production.

For IBM Power buyers, the relevant detail is that watsonx connects to existing systems, including Db2 for i, through APIs, connectors, and event streams. It does not require the underlying ERP, database, or application layer to be replaced or migrated first.

Example

A logistics company running IBM i on PowerVS can connect watsonx.ai to Db2 for i to predict shipment delays without changing the ERP that tracks those shipments.
