ASP (Auxiliary Storage Pool)

A logical grouping of DASD storage on IBM i that organizes data across the physical disk hardware attached to a partition.

Definition

ASPs organize how IBM i uses the physical DASD storage attached to a partition, and ASP-level statistics like disk busy percentage are the standard reference point for storage hardware sizing decisions. Multiple ASPs can be configured to isolate certain data or improve performance and recovery characteristics.

Buyers evaluating storage hardware upgrades should pull current ASP statistics before comparing drives or expansion options, since free space alone does not reflect performance headroom.

Example

A buyer noticing rising ASP disk busy percentage during month-end processing may need additional DASD capacity or faster drives, not just more free space.
